FOOD & DELIVERYSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel NYT Cooking subscription.

NYT Cooking is its own subscription, separate from a New York Times news subscription and from Games. Cancelling one does not cancel the other, and each has to be ended on its own. If The Times bills you, cancel at nytimes.com/account, where each subscription is listed separately. If you subscribed in the iPhone or iPad app, Apple bills you: Settings, your Apple Account name, Subscriptions, then the NYT Cooking entry, Cancel Subscription. Your saved recipes stay in your Recipe Box, but access to them ends with the subscription.

Before you start.

  • Check which subscriptions the account actually holds. A Times account can carry News, Cooking, Games, Wirecutter and The Athletic at the same time, each billed separately, so a single cancellation rarely stops every charge.
  • Match the charge to the subscription before cancelling. Look at the amount and the description on your statement, because cancelling Cooking does nothing about a news charge and the reverse is also true.
  • Check who bills you. A receipt from Apple means Apple controls the cancellation and The Times cannot stop it for you. A charge from The New York Times means you cancel in your Times account.
  • Note that The Times only offers online cancellation for what it calls eligible subscriptions billed through The New York Times. Where yours is not eligible, it documents chat with a Customer Care Advocate or calling 866-273-3612 in the US, within published hours, so allow time rather than leaving it to the renewal date.
  • If you want the recipes you have saved, copy them out before access ends: the Recipe Box is only readable while the subscription is active.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel NYT Cooking, step by step.

Cancel a subscription billed by The New York Times

This is the route when The Times charges you directly. Each subscription is listed on its own, which is what makes it possible to cancel Cooking and keep the news, or the reverse.

  1. Sign in at nytimes.com/account with the email address on the subscription.
  2. Open the subscription or account overview and find the list of your subscriptions.
  3. Identify the NYT Cooking line specifically, separately from any News, Games or Athletic subscription.
  4. Use the cancellation option on that subscription and follow the prompts.
  5. Complete every step to the confirmation, and note the date your access ends.
  6. If the flow directs you to chat or a phone line, use it rather than assuming the subscription has stopped.

Check the account page afterwards. Any subscription still showing a renewal date is still running, whatever the cancellation screen said about Cooking.

Cancel an NYT Cooking subscription billed by Apple

If you subscribed inside the app on an iPhone or iPad, Apple is the biller and the cancellation happens in iOS Settings. The Times cannot cancel an Apple-billed subscription for you.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your name (your Apple Account) at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Select the NYT Cooking entry in the list of active subscriptions.
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

A New York Times subscription bought through Apple appears under Apple's subscriptions with its own entry. If you hold both Cooking and News through Apple, cancel each one separately.

Cancel through New York Times customer care

The Times publishes chat and phone contact for subscription changes, which is the route when the online cancellation will not complete.

  1. Open the Help section of The New York Times site and find the cancellation or contact options.
  2. Start a chat or use the phone line listed there.
  3. Say specifically that you want the Cooking subscription cancelled, and whether the news subscription should continue.
  4. Ask for the end date and for written confirmation, then check your account page shows the change.

What happens next?

  • Cancelling NYT Cooking does not cancel a New York Times news subscription, a Games subscription, Wirecutter or The Athletic. Each is billed and cancelled separately, and the others keep charging.
  • Access usually continues to the end of the period you have already paid for rather than stopping on the day you cancel.
  • Recipes you have saved to your Recipe Box are not deleted by cancelling, but the Recipe Box is a subscriber feature, so you lose access to it along with the rest of Cooking.
  • Your nytimes.com account itself stays open after a subscription ends, which is why a later resubscription finds your saved material again.
  • A subscription bought through Apple is refunded by Apple, not by The Times, and Apple decides those requests under its own policy.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

I cancelled The New York Times but I am still being charged

You almost certainly cancelled a different subscription from the one charging you. News, Cooking, Games, Wirecutter and The Athletic are separate subscriptions on one account, each with its own price and renewal. Open your account page and check every line, then cancel the specific one that matches the charge.

I cancelled Cooking and lost my news access too

Check what was actually cancelled rather than assuming. If you held a bundle or All Access rather than a standalone Cooking subscription, cancelling it ends everything that bundle covered. A standalone Cooking cancellation leaves a separate news subscription untouched.

NYT Cooking is not listed in my account

Two common reasons. Either the subscription sits on a different email address, so check which address the receipts go to, or Apple bills it, in which case it appears in Settings, Subscriptions on your iPhone rather than on the Times website.

The website will not let me cancel online

Online cancellation covers what The Times calls eligible subscriptions billed through The New York Times, so where the option is missing it genuinely is not available to you. The Times documents two alternatives: select Contact Customer Care to chat with a Customer Care Advocate, or call 866-273-3612 in the US, both 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. E.T. Monday to Friday and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. E.T. on weekends and holidays. Start well before the renewal date and keep written confirmation.

Will I lose the recipes I saved?

The Recipe Box is part of the Cooking subscription, so when access ends you can no longer open it, even though the saved list is not deleted from your account. If those recipes matter, copy them somewhere of your own before the subscription lapses.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

How do I cancel my NYT Cooking subscription?

If The Times bills you, sign in at nytimes.com/account, find the Cooking subscription in your list of subscriptions and cancel that specific line. If Apple bills you, open Settings, your Apple Account name, Subscriptions, select NYT Cooking and tap Cancel Subscription.

Does cancelling NYT Cooking cancel my New York Times news subscription?

No. They are separate subscriptions on the same account, billed separately. Cancelling Cooking leaves the news subscription running, and cancelling the news subscription leaves Cooking running. Each one has to be cancelled on its own.

What happens to my Recipe Box after I cancel?

The saved recipes are not deleted from your account, but the Recipe Box is a subscriber feature and you lose access to it when the subscription ends. Copy anything you want to keep before then.

Can I get a refund on NYT Cooking?

It depends who billed you. A subscription bought through Apple is refunded by Apple under its own policy, and a subscription billed by The Times is a matter for Times customer care. Cancelling and requesting a refund are separate actions.

How do I cancel an App Store free trial before I’m charged?

For a trial billed by Apple, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Select the trial, choose the cancellation option and confirm. Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the trial ends to prevent renewal. Check the confirmation for your access end date. Add the trial deadline to Subex and set a reminder so you can review it in time.
