SECURITY & PRIVACYSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel Surfshark subscription.

Log in to your Surfshark account, click your email address in the top-right corner and select Subscription, open the Payments section, then click Cancel auto-renewal and confirm. The subscription stays active to the end of the current billing period. On refunds, Surfshark states the 30-day money-back guarantee applies to your first purchase only and does not apply once the subscription has already renewed, which is the position most people are in when a multi-year term comes round again.

Before you start.

  • Count from your first purchase. Surfshark states you are eligible for a full refund within 30 days of your first purchase, and separately that the guarantee does not apply if the subscription has already renewed.
  • Check how you paid, because Surfshark gates the guarantee on the billing partner rather than the card. It states the subscription must have been purchased directly from Surfshark or through an eligible reseller, naming Paddle, Google Play or Cleverbridge.
  • Add-ons can disqualify a purchase. Surfshark states the guarantee does not apply where the purchase includes non-refundable add-ons, naming anonymous Dedicated IP and Alternative ID services.
  • A refund already given closes the door. Surfshark states the guarantee applies only to the first subscription purchase and does not apply if a refund has already been issued before.
  • Surfshark sells long terms at a low monthly-equivalent headline price. The renewal is at the standard rate, so check the actual renewal amount and date in the Payments section rather than the monthly figure you remember.
  • If the cancel option is not visible at all, Surfshark states the subscription may have been purchased through an app store, which is where it then has to be cancelled.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel Surfshark, step by step.

Cancel auto-renewal in your Surfshark account

This is the route for a subscription bought on Surfshark's website, and the one it documents.

  1. Log in to your Surfshark account page.
  2. Click your email address in the top-right corner and select Subscription.
  3. Open the Payments section.
  4. Click Cancel auto-renewal, then confirm.

Surfshark states the subscription stays active until the end of the current billing period. It also states that if the cancellation option is not visible, the subscription may have been purchased through an app store.

Cancel a store subscription

Surfshark states that subscriptions bought through Google Play, the Apple App Store or the Amazon Appstore must be cancelled on those platforms.

  1. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, select Surfshark and confirm the cancellation.
  2. On Android, open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, select Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions, select Surfshark and tap Cancel subscription.
  3. For an Amazon Appstore purchase, Surfshark states refunds are managed by Amazon.
  4. Surfshark states Apple refunds must be requested directly from Apple via Apple Support.

For Google Play, Surfshark states a purchase made in the last 48 hours can be refunded directly through Google Play Support, and that otherwise Surfshark support can assist with the request.

Request a refund inside the 30 days

Surfshark handles refund requests through live chat rather than a self-service button.

  1. Check the date of your first purchase against the 30 days.
  2. Check that none of Surfshark's exclusions apply: an already renewed subscription, a previous refund, a purchase outside its named billing partners, or a non-refundable add-on.
  3. Open live chat from Surfshark's support site and ask for a refund, giving the purchase date and payment reference.
  4. Cancel auto-renewal separately if you have not already, so the subscription does not renew while the request is handled.

Surfshark states that once approved, refunds are typically processed within a few business days.

What happens next?

  • Cancelling auto-renewal leaves the VPN working until the end of the current billing period.
  • Check the Payments section afterwards to confirm auto-renewal shows as off, and keep any confirmation email.
  • Surfshark states an approved refund is typically processed within a few business days.
  • A refund is once only. Surfshark states the guarantee does not apply if a refund has already been issued before, so using it now means it is not available later.
  • Cancelling the subscription does not close the account. Removing the account is a separate request.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

The cancel auto-renewal option is not visible

Surfshark names this case directly: it states that if the cancellation option is not visible, the subscription may have been purchased through an app store. Check the receipt, then cancel in Apple, Google Play or Amazon as appropriate, because the website cannot stop a store-billed subscription.

My renewal was many times what I paid the first time

Surfshark sells multi-year terms at a discounted introductory rate and renews at the standard rate. Subscribers report renewals several times the original price. This is not covered by the money-back guarantee, which Surfshark states does not apply once the subscription has already renewed, so the practical remedy is cancelling auto-renewal before the term ends.

Surfshark refused a refund on a recurring payment

That matches its published policy rather than being a judgement about your case: the guarantee covers the first subscription purchase and Surfshark states it does not apply once the subscription has renewed. Asking for an exception is reasonable, but the published rule is what support is applying.

I cancelled and was still charged

Check whether the cancellation landed on the channel that bills you, since a cancellation on Surfshark's site does not stop an App Store, Play or Amazon subscription. Then check the date against the end of the billing period. Keep the confirmation, and if the charge is genuinely after a confirmed cancellation, take it to live chat with that evidence.

My refund was refused because of an add-on

Surfshark states the guarantee does not apply where the purchase includes non-refundable add-ons, and names anonymous Dedicated IP and Alternative ID. If either was bundled into the order, the whole purchase can fall outside the guarantee, which is worth checking on the original invoice rather than guessing.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

How do I cancel my Surfshark subscription?

Log in, click your email address in the top-right corner, select Subscription, open the Payments section, then click Cancel auto-renewal and confirm. The subscription stays active to the end of the current billing period.

What is Surfshark's refund window?

Surfshark states you are eligible for a full refund within 30 days of your first purchase when you bought through its website. The window runs from that first purchase, not from a renewal or from when you stopped using it.

Can I get a refund on a Surfshark renewal?

Not under the guarantee. Surfshark states the 30-day money-back guarantee does not apply if the subscription has already renewed, if a refund was issued before, or if the purchase includes non-refundable add-ons.

Who refunds an App Store or Google Play Surfshark charge?

Surfshark states Apple refunds must be requested directly from Apple, and that Amazon manages its own. For Google Play, it states a purchase made in the last 48 hours can be refunded through Google Play Support, and otherwise Surfshark support can assist.
