In this guide
Before you start.
- Start by establishing that the free products are free. WhatsApp describes the Business app as free to download and use, with a mix of free and paid features, and consumer WhatsApp Messenger carries no subscription at all. A recurring charge is coming from one of the paid things below, or from something that is not WhatsApp.
- As of September 2026, WhatsApp Business Premium is no longer documented as a separate branded product on WhatsApp's own help site or on its store listings. The App Store listing for WhatsApp Business shows Meta Verified for business as the in-app purchase, and the app's own description attributes the extra linked devices, which used to be a Premium selling point, to Meta Verified. Treat a search for Premium as a search for Meta Verified.
- Separate the two WhatsApp business products, because they bill completely differently. The WhatsApp Business app is the one small businesses install on a phone. The WhatsApp Business Platform, also called the Cloud API, is the programmatic product used at scale, and it is billed per message to a Meta business account rather than as an app subscription.
- Check the receipt before anything else. An Apple receipt means Apple billed you and Apple holds the cancellation. A Meta or Facebook charge on a card statement points at a Meta business account, an ad account, or the Business Platform, none of which are cancellable in an app store.
- If the charge is small, recurring and you run ads that click to WhatsApp, look at your Meta ad account rather than at WhatsApp. Ads that click to WhatsApp are a Meta advertising product and bill to the ad account that runs them.
- The old WhatsApp annual subscription no longer exists. WhatsApp has not charged consumers a subscription for many years, so a charge described as a WhatsApp membership fee on a personal card deserves scepticism and a look at the full statement descriptor.
FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel WhatsApp Business Premium, step by step.
Cancel a Meta Verified subscription on iPhone
The App Store listing for WhatsApp Business shows Meta Verified for business as its in-app purchase, which means Apple bills that purchase and Apple holds the cancellation.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your name at the top, which is your Apple Account.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Look for the WhatsApp Business or Meta Verified entry and select it.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
- If nothing WhatsApp-related is listed, Apple did not bill you and the charge is coming from one of the Meta routes below.
Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before a renewal date so the cancellation registers before the charge is taken. Deleting the app does not cancel an App Store subscription.
Cancel on Android
The WhatsApp Business listing on Google Play carries an in-app purchases badge, so a subscription started in the Android app is billed by Google and cancelled in the Play Store.
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile icon in the top right.
- Select Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Find the WhatsApp Business entry and select it.
- Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.
- If it is not listed, check that you are signed in to the Google account that paid, then look at the Meta routes instead.
Google states that it cannot cancel a subscription on your behalf: the account holder has to complete it.
A charge from a Meta business account
This covers the two charges that are not app subscriptions at all: WhatsApp Business Platform messaging and Meta advertising. Neither appears in an Apple or Google subscription list, which is why they feel impossible to cancel.
- Sign in to Meta Business Suite with the account that owns the WhatsApp Business Platform number or the ad account.
- Open the billing or payments section and look at the payment method and the recent charges.
- For Business Platform messaging, remember what you are looking at is usage, not a subscription: Meta bills per template message delivered, so the charge stops when the messaging does rather than when a switch is flipped.
- For an advertising charge, pause or remove the campaigns, including any ads that click to WhatsApp, and check the ad account's spending limit.
- Remove or replace the payment method on the account if you are closing the business presence entirely.
Meta moved WhatsApp Business Platform to per-message pricing on 1 July 2025 and states you are only charged when a template message is delivered. Service conversations became free for all businesses in November 2024, and non-template messages inside an open customer service window are free.
What happens next?
- Cancelling a store subscription stops the renewal rather than the app. The WhatsApp Business app stays installed and free to use: WhatsApp describes it as free to download and use with a mix of free and paid features.
- Your phone number and your chats are not part of the subscription. Ending a paid tier does not remove the WhatsApp Business account or the number attached to it.
- The paid extras stop. The App Store description attributes the higher linked-device limit, up to 10 instead of five, to a Meta Verified subscription, so that allowance reverts when the subscription ends.
- Apple and Google both leave a cancelled subscription running until the end of the period you already paid for.
- A Business Platform charge does not end with a cancellation because there is nothing subscribed. It ends when the messaging that generates it stops, or when the number is removed from the Meta business account.
- Refunds come from whoever took the payment. Apple and Google each run their own refund processes for charges they collected, and a Meta business account charge is raised with Meta.
WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK
If you get stuck.
I see a WhatsApp charge and no subscription anywhere
Then it is almost certainly not an app store subscription. The likely candidates are Meta Verified billed by Apple or Google under a slightly different name in the list, WhatsApp Business Platform messaging billed to a Meta business account, or a Meta advertising charge from campaigns including ads that click to WhatsApp. Read the full descriptor on the statement: a Meta or Facebook prefix points at a business account rather than at an app store. If nothing matches, treat it as a charge from an unrelated merchant and take it to your bank.
I am looking for WhatsApp Business Premium and cannot find it
That is because it is not there. As of September 2026, WhatsApp's own store listings and product navigation do not show a Premium tier: the WhatsApp Business App Store listing lists Meta Verified for business as its in-app purchase, and business.whatsapp.com presents only the Business Platform and the Business App. The multi-device allowance that Premium was known for is now described in the app listing as a Meta Verified benefit. Cancel Meta Verified where it is billed instead.
I am being billed for WhatsApp but I only use the free messenger
Consumer WhatsApp Messenger has no subscription, so a charge is not coming from it. Check your Apple and Google subscription lists for anything Meta-related, check whether anyone with access to your card runs a business account or ad account, and check whether the descriptor is actually a different merchant. WhatsApp does not bill people for ordinary messaging.
I deleted the WhatsApp Business app and the charge still came
Deleting an app never cancels a store subscription. Apple and Google keep billing until the subscription itself is cancelled in the store settings, and a Business Platform or advertising charge is not tied to the app being installed at all. Go to the subscription list or the Meta business account rather than reinstalling.
Someone contacted me about a WhatsApp subscription fee
Be careful. WhatsApp Messenger has no consumer subscription and has not had one for years, so a message demanding a membership fee to keep using WhatsApp is not from WhatsApp. Never pay it and never hand over a verification code. If you genuinely hold a paid business tier, the charge appears on an Apple, Google or Meta receipt you can verify yourself.
Still not cancelled?Common reasons a subscription will not cancel How to cancel an app subscription
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
Is WhatsApp free?
Yes. Consumer WhatsApp Messenger is free to use and carries no subscription, and WhatsApp describes the separate WhatsApp Business app as free to download and use with a mix of free and paid features. The paid part inside the Business app today is Meta Verified for business.
How do I cancel WhatsApp Business Premium?
There is no Premium tier documented on WhatsApp's store listings or product pages as of September 2026, so what you are looking for is almost certainly Meta Verified for business. On iPhone, cancel it in Settings, your name, Subscriptions. On Android, in the Play Store under Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions. If the charge is not there, it is a Meta business account charge rather than an app subscription.
What is the difference between the WhatsApp Business app and the Business Platform?
The Business app is for small businesses managing conversations personally on a phone, and it is free to download. The WhatsApp Business Platform is the programmatic product for medium and large businesses at scale, and Meta bills it per template message delivered to a Meta business account, not as a subscription anyone can cancel in an app store.
Why is Meta charging me for WhatsApp messages?
That is WhatsApp Business Platform pricing. Meta moved to per-message pricing on 1 July 2025 and states you are only charged when a template message is delivered, across its marketing, utility, authentication and service categories. Service conversations became free for all businesses in November 2024, and non-template messages inside an open customer service window are free.
Will cancelling lose my WhatsApp Business number or chats?
No. The number and the account are separate from a paid tier. The app remains free to use afterwards, and what ends are the paid features, such as the higher linked-device allowance the app listing attributes to Meta Verified.
