In this guide
Before you start.
- Find your next billing date. LA Fitness says a mailed cancellation postmarked at least 5 business days before it should result in no further billings, and one postmarked inside that window may be billed once more.
- Check whether your agreement has an initial term of three months or more. LA Fitness says that while you are still inside an initial term, the cancellation takes effect when the term ends, and cancelling before then carries a termination fee.
- Separate any personal training agreement from the club membership. LA Fitness says training memberships cannot be cancelled through its website, so they need the club or the terms in your agreement.
- Know about the annual fee. LA Fitness sign-up pages describe a per-person annual fee billed 14 days after joining and every year after that, separately from your dues.
- If you only need a break, compare the freeze option first. LA Fitness offers a reduced-cost freeze for dues members, described below.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel LA Fitness, step by step.
Cancel online
LA Fitness lists the online account as one of its three cancellation methods for club memberships. It is the quickest route if you can sign in, and it gives you a dated record.
- Sign in to your account at lafitness.com.
- Open the online account page that LA Fitness links from the Cancel My Membership answer on its Membership Questions page.
- Choose the option to cancel your membership and follow the prompts to the end.
- Wait for the page that says your membership has been canceled. LA Fitness says a confirmation email follows, so keep it.
- If the site says a training membership cannot be cancelled online, that part has to go through your local club instead.
This route covers club memberships. LA Fitness states that training memberships cannot be cancelled through the website and that the circumstances for cancelling them are in your membership agreement.
Cancel at your club
LA Fitness names cancelling in person at a club as its second method and points members to the front desk. Use it when you cannot sign in online or you also need to end a training agreement.
- Go to an LA Fitness club during staffed hours and ask at the front desk to cancel your membership.
- Say whether you are also ending a personal training agreement, since LA Fitness handles those through the club rather than the website.
- Ask when the cancellation takes effect and whether one more billing is still due under your agreement.
- Ask for written or emailed confirmation and note the date and the name of the person who helped you.
Bring the email address and details on your account so staff can find the right membership quickly.
Cancel by mail
LA Fitness accepts written notice of cancellation by mail and recommends registered or certified mail with a record kept for your files. The postmark date decides whether one more billing happens.
- Write a short signed letter saying you are cancelling your LA Fitness membership. Include your full name, the address, email and phone number on the account, and your membership or agreement number if you have it.
- Mail it to LA Fitness, P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619.
- Use registered or certified mail, as LA Fitness recommends, and keep the receipt and a copy of the letter.
- Make sure the postmark is at least 5 business days before your next billing date.
LA Fitness says that if notice is postmarked within 5 business days of the billing date you may be billed once more, and that it will refund that additional billing.
What happens next?
- You can keep using the club for any time you have already paid for. LA Fitness says prepaid last month's dues are applied to the month after your final recurring payment, and the membership expires at the end of that prepaid month.
- If you are inside an initial term of three months or more, LA Fitness says the cancellation takes effect when the term ends unless you pay the termination fee to leave earlier.
- Handle a training agreement separately. LA Fitness says training memberships cannot be cancelled through the website and points you to your agreement and your local club.
- Keep the confirmation email and watch your next two statements. If a charge appears after a mailed notice that was postmarked 5 or more business days early, raise it with LA Fitness with your mailing receipt.
Pausing or freezing LA Fitness.
Can I freeze my LA Fitness membership instead of cancelling?
Yes. LA Fitness says monthly dues members can suspend for an indefinite time for a monthly fee, bi-weekly members for a fee per bi-weekly billing, and paid-in-full members for up to 6 months for a one-time freeze fee. Weekly dues members cannot suspend. To freeze, sign in and use the Freeze link in the left side menu. If your next billing date is within 10 days, the freeze takes effect from the following billing.
WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK
If you get stuck.
I cancelled but was billed one more time
Check the postmark or submission date against your billing date. LA Fitness says a mailed cancellation postmarked within 5 business days of the next billing date may be billed once more, and that it will refund that additional billing. Contact the club or LA Fitness with your mailing receipt or confirmation email and ask for that refund.
The website will not let me cancel my training membership
That is by design. LA Fitness states that training memberships cannot be cancelled through its website, that the circumstances for cancelling are in your membership agreement, and that you should contact your local club for assistance.
I was charged a termination fee
LA Fitness says that if your membership, training or other agreement has an initial term of three months or more and you cancel before that term ends, a termination fee applies. If you are outside the initial term, you can cancel at any time without it. Check the start date and term length in your agreement before disputing the fee.
A large charge appeared about two weeks after I joined, or once a year
That is likely the annual fee. LA Fitness sign-up pages say the annual fee is billed 14 days after enrollment and every year thereafter, and it is separate from monthly dues. If you are cancelling close to the anniversary of that charge, ask the club whether it will fall before your cancellation takes effect.
I stopped the payment at my bank instead of cancelling
Blocking a payment does not end the agreement. Cancel through one of the three methods LA Fitness lists, online, at the front desk or by mail, and keep the proof, then use a payment block only as a backstop if charges continue after the notice period.
Still not cancelled?Common reasons a subscription will not cancel
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
Can I cancel my LA Fitness membership online?
Yes, for club memberships. LA Fitness lists your online account as one of three cancellation methods, alongside the front desk and mailed written notice. Training memberships cannot be cancelled online.
Can I cancel LA Fitness by phone or email?
LA Fitness does not list phone as a cancellation method. It says that depending on your state of enrollment, your agreement may allow cancelling by email. Otherwise use the online account, the front desk or mailed notice.
How much notice does LA Fitness need?
For mailed cancellations, LA Fitness says a postmark at least 5 business days before your next billing date should result in no further billings. For general advice that applies to any gym, see /how-to-cancel-a-membership.
Can I transfer my LA Fitness membership if I move?
LA Fitness suggests checking its Locations page for a club near your new home as an alternative to cancelling. It does not describe transferring a membership to another person.
Does deleting the LA Fitness app cancel my membership?
No. Removing the app does not touch the agreement. Use one of the methods LA Fitness lists: the online account, the front desk, mailed written notice, or email where your agreement allows it.
